You don’t always have to call in the special forces for a minor problem. There are a number of things you can do to fix what might be heart-stopping PC problems, so don’t panic when things start to go wrong.
Of course, none of us like seeing the Blue Screen of Death, which sounds far more ominous than it really is – it’s just an error message, after all. It also can be a major headache when a program we need right now keeps crashing just as a deadline is approaching. Keep calm, though, and you’ll be able to fix most minor home computing problems yourself.
Here are some of the most common fixes for simple problems:
1. Restart the computer
It’s the simplest yet most effective fix for all kinds of problems and you should definitely try it before you call in help. Restarting the computer can clear the memory, rerun basic processes and get the system running again.
2. Scan for viruses and malware
Even if you can’t see anything, it’s worth running a full malware scan as invasive software is getting better and better at burrowing into the system and can occasionally cause your system to run slowly or even trigger conflicts deep in the operating system. Run your antivirus software and occasionally run a program like MalwareBytes, in addition to your usual protection, as this can pick up malicious bugs that others miss.
3. Clear your cache
If it’s an internet problem, clearing the browser’s cache can work. This contains copies of your recently visited web pages, which is designed to save time when you surf the web. Sometimes clearing the cache can fix a problem with a website, but this is becoming less useful as web browsers get more advanced.
4. Reinstall a problem program
Occasionally, a program simply won’t start up smoothly and will repeatedly crash. It might seem like a headache, but a simple corrupted string can be the culprit and reinstalling the software will prevent this happening again. So do it once, do it properly and all your problems could disappear.
